Editor and creative director Lesley Martin will analyze the different stages of making a photobook, from the conceptual to the practical. She will discuss how to move from an initial set of photographs toward a sound, unifying idea that will guide the subsequent process of decision making. Martin will draw on examples taken from her work as an editor of more than a hundred books by photographers including Rinko Kawauchi, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Stephen Shore, and Zanele Muholi to explore the development of a photobook and answer the ultimate question, “What makes a book work?”

Lesley A. Martin is creative director of the Aperture Foundation and publisher of The PhotoBook Review. Her writing on photography has been published in Aperture, Ojo de Pez, FOAM, and IMA magazine, among other publications, and she has edited over one hundred books of photography, including LaToya Ruby Frazier: A Notion of Family; Rinko Kawauchi: Illuminance; Stephen Shore: Selected Works; and Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama. In 2012, she co-founded the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards. Martin has curated exhibitions that have travelled both nationally and internationally, including Mickalene Thomas: Muse; The Ubiquitous Image; and Aperture Remix, a commission-based exhibition celebrating Aperture’s sixtieth anniversary. She is currently a visiting critic at the Yale University School of Art.
